I have this friend who married a very bad guy. Okay, so I have a lot of friends who married bad guys. But this dude is very bad. We’re fairly positive that he targeted and then conned her solely because she made more money than him. The worst part is that their child is stuck with an equally bad court system, which favors joint custody even over what really best for the child.

So for this week, I’m in celebration for Halle Berry, who recently won a victory in child support court. My friend and I can live vicariously through her court win. She has joint physical custody, but she had to pay $16,000 per month to baby daddy #1. That was an even worse con job that my what my friend has to deal with.
Not all celebrities, of course, win custody. I’ll never understand why they get married. Or not have air-tight prenups/custody pre-agreements. But they do, and we love to watch their real-life drama.
I think conning people to marry you so you live a comfy lifestyle after divorce … it’s a real thing. Just look at Kevin Federline. I mean seriously. He could have loved Britney … idk. Maaaaaaybe. Despite this statement, I don’t hate the child support system. I just think it’s ridiculous how much people have to pay.
In solidarity for Halle (I so love Halle), I whipped up this quick little appeteaser. I love brie, too, btw. So anything with brie … is Halle good. (You see what I did there?) And yes, I used berries for Berry. You can substitute any kind you’d like.
The Promos
This week’s newsletter is sponsored by Morning Brew! I enjoy Morning Brew each, well, morning … with my brew … I like that it gives me a broad range of news (including the stock markets) without too much left-or-right-leaning. It’s free.

Fun in the Sun all-genre book giveaway might have something sweet for you to read with your Halle Berry brie bites.
The Sample sends you one article from a random blog or newsletter that matches up with your interests. Help a girl out and check it out … I get more subscribers if someone signs up for another newsletter!
Happenings
I realized after I wrote this newsletter that the topic of a woman winning in child support court might not be the best subject for Father’s Day. If it makes you feel any better, I did an article a while ago about celebrity moms who lost custody. I also wrote a little ditty about some DIY Father’s Day gifts. Who loves ya.
I also finally got around to finishing the recap of Amazon Prime’s Goliath, Season 2. It only took me like … 2 years. I thought it was apropos since I’m talking about Halle Berry. (Monster’s Ball, anyone?) Onto watching (again) and recapping Season 3!
Still reading Uniform Justice by KJ Sutherland. While I’m away (see below), I’m going to hit on that legal thriller stack pretty hard. I’m taking a pause on the legal entertainment news to write a legal thriller book review/recipe combo for the next month. Hit reply and let me know if you like it.
Next week, I’m going to Jacksonville, NC, to help take care of some cute AF doggies. Loads of people loved the Seaside Sanotorium newsletter that I did, so maybe there’ll be some more urban exploration going on. In the meantime, here’s my cute AF doggy:

Pastry Phyllo Brie Bites with Blackberry Compote and Pecans

Ingredients
- a round of brie cheese
- 1/2 roll phyllo pastry dough (from the freezer section), pre-defrosted
- 1 pint of blackberries
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon of lemon juice
- 1 cup of pecans
Instructions
For the pastries
- Begin by chopping and toasting the pecans. I used my lowest toaster setting (3 1/2 minutes).
- Roll out a sheet of phyllo pastry dough. These sheets are super thin and delicate, and they might crumble apart on you. It doesn't matter, though ... still tastes yummy. Spray the sheet with cooking spray (preferably olive oil spray). Put another sheet on top ... repeat until you have 4 sheets of phyllo pastry dough stacked together.
- Cut the pastry dough into 8 squares. For each square, stuff inside a muffin tin spot.
- If you have a standard muffin tin (12 muffin spots), then you can use 2 more sheet of phyllo pastry dough cut in half to make the remaining 4 pastry dough stacks.
- Cut up the brie wheel. I kept the rind on ... good, earthy flavor ... and added one to each tin spot. Use the up the rest if you have leftover brie. Or snack on it.
- Pecans should be done now. Divide among the 12 muffin tin spots.
- Bake for 6 minutes in a preheated oven at 350F.
For the compote
- Over medium high heat, combine together blackberries, sugar, and lemon juice. Cook until bubbly, then set aside to cool. Compote will thicken as it cools. Divide equally among the 12 muffin tin spots.
Notes
One last step: add the honey (optional)!
