Here’s another tutorial on how to make a heart cut out shirt. Do you remember this heart cut-out t-shirt refashion? I love that shirt. Everyone else loves that shirt, too. I get soooo many compliments on it.
The best part about that t-shirt is that it is a 10 minute, quick sew tutorial. Well, this year, I have another quick-sew, step-by-step DIY tutorial on how to refashion a plain gray t-shirt into a back heart cutout for Valentine’s Day!
How To Make A Heart Cut Out Shirt Refashion
Materials needed:
Start with a plain gray thrift store t-shirt.
And some sexy red lace 🙂 Who doesn’t love some lace? Make sure that your lace is the stretchy kind.
Make a heart on the t-shirt’s back. You can also make a heart on the front, but I didn’t want my bra to show through the lace in the front. I free handed this heart, but you can also use a plain piece of paper and make a template.
Cut out the red lace so it covers the heart. You want to be generous, here. Make sure your lace is facing the right direction! (You want the right-side of the lace to face you.)
This part of the tutorial is the most difficult, but I hope I explain it right … put your hand underneath the heart, and your finger at the top of the heart. Pull the top of the t-shirt down, and put a pin there.
Now, flatten the t-shirt again. Pull the shirt up from the bottom, and you should see the pin. Pull the lace up to that spot, and using another pin, pin the lace to the shirt. Make sure that you pin the lace to the correct side of the shirt, e.g. the back and not the front.

Using your hands to “flatten” and “smooth” the shirt, pin the remaining heart. I hope you can see the pins and the heart. Be careful with this step. This is the most important part of how to make a heart cut out shirt.
Start at the “V” in the heart at the top and start sewing around. Make sure that you do not sew the front!! Take your time and don’t stretch the t-shirt material.
We come to the bottom “V” and stop. We have to turn the t-shirt around because the front is all twisted into the sewing machine.
Here we are, all done. 🙂
Grab the bottom of the heart and pinch.
Make a slight cut. MAKE SURE YOU DON’T CUT THE LACE — it’s easy to snip it!!
Cut up the center to meet the heart middle. Once you cut the first strip, all the rest will be easy. Cut the remaining strips.

I turned the t-shirt inside out, and cut around the heart so it wasn’t all fabric-y when I wear the t-shirt.
